While it has been posted on Facebook by many of our members, but in case you missed it.
Congratulations to Kelly Williams for being honored as the Environmental Professional at the PA Wilds awards ceremony at Gobblers Knob in Punxsutawney on July 27th. Kelly’s work in helping to reverse the pollution caused by past mining practices. In her “spare” time she serves on several boards including our chapter.
Kelly was only one of two Allegheny Mountain winners.
The Chapter was awarded the Inspiring Youth Award for the work we have done with the area youth. This award is the results of several of our chapter members and their dedication. It’s their dedication to helping make our youth programs the best in PA Wilds and they should all be proud.
Please check out our website to see some photos of the awards and more about the awards.
Another chapter member was given an award from the PA Fish and Boat Commission this summer. John Duck was honored for his years of helping stock the streams in Clearfield County. Congratulations to John!
Chapter Happenings
We had a busy spring. As you can see below how the chapter helps inspire youth.
On April 22nd our chapter held the annual clean up at the Tannery Dam after which we help the Lakeside Methodist Church with their homeless children fishing event. We had a good turn out even though there were competing events that day.
On May 5th we took the DuBois Area Middle School Fly Fishing Club fishing at Camp Mountain Run. We served the students hot dogs and potato salad then we fished the large dam. We provided the students with fly rods and flies as well as our members provided some of their special offerings. While we didn’t keep score many trout were caught and released. We provide the equipment, bus transportation, as well as providing advisors for the club during the school year.
May 19th annual environmental day at Camp Mountain Run. The entire 8th grade from the DuBois Middle School attends this event. We have been doing this event for about 20yrs. This year we did something different at one of our stations. We did a tree planting in the area across from the dining hall. Students planted over 100 trees in addition to fishing, collecting macro, learning about invasive species, and seeing a live demonstration on electro fishing, provided by TU National. A special thanks goes to Kylie Maland from the Western PA Conservancy for going above and beyond helping the students plant the trees as well as providing many of the seedlings. It will be fun to watch how this area grows over the years. Hopefully the class of 2027 will Come back and see their legacy.
On May 25th, we had a station at the Punxsutawney Elementary School 1st grades environmental day. We showed the students live macros and went through the SMART Angler program as well as playing a game to show how fast invasive species can over run an area.
Not everything this spring was youth only. On May 18th we once again joined the Iron Furnace Chapter with a picnic at the Walter Dick Park in Brookville. There was a good turnout, and it was nice to have many children take advantage of fishing and the playground. Note: Please take a trip to the project and see how nice the habitat work looks.
Chapter Summer Picnic
August 27th is our family picnic at Bendigo State Park near Johnsonburg. We will once again provide all the food and drink, but it would be great if you would let us know if you’re planning to attend so we don’t get too much food. We are joined by the members of the Jim Zwald Chapter. This is a great opportunity to spend a relaxing day visiting with other TU members as well as doing some trout fishing in the cold water of the East Branch of the Clarion River. We did see a notice that the pool will be closing on July 27th this year so anyone wanting to swim will need to play in the stream. Please let us know if you will be attending so we have a good head count. Call 814-371-9290 and leave a message.
