Coming Soon – Delayed Harvest in Downtown DuBois???
Rub your eyes, scratch your head; this is not a typo. AMCTU has approached the PA Fish and Boat Commission about establishing a Delayed Harvest fishing project on the Sandy Lick Creek near the DuBois Mall and in Beaver Meadow. On August 2, fisheries biologist Al Woomer surveyed the stream along with chapter members and children from the YMCA’s day program. Despite the lack of rain and high temperatures, the highest water temperature was 68º; the pH averaged around 6.8; and electro shocking yielded 15 species (including largemouth bass, pike, catfish, shiners, darters, sculpins, and chubs) of fish. Even with the high iron and reddish coloring this waterway has a great potential to be added to the stocking list. We are generating support of this project with the City of DuBois and the Army Corps of Engineers and hope to update chapter members on our progress at the October membership meeting.
Jefferson County Conservation District Seeks Chapter Input/Help for Projects on Mahoning Creek
Todd Beers of the Jefferson County Conservation District presented the program at our March 9 membership meeting in Big Run. He highlighted some of the work that has been done on the lower reaches of Mahoning Creek and its tributaries. He is looking to start projects on the upper reaches of Mahoning Creek and would like TU volunteers to provide input. If you are aware of problems such as erosion, mine discharge or other sources of pollution on the Mahoning Creek Watershed you are encouraged to let Todd know. Either call his office (814) 849-7463 or e-mail him at tjbeers@alltel.net. Once problems are identified, the Conservation District helps area watershed groups apply for funds such as Growing Greener Grants to rectify them. As the Conservation District is a small government program he must recruit watershed organizations to conduct and implement the programs – he may be seeking further help from our Chapter in the future.
AMCTU Helps at Watershed Awareness Day at DAMS
George Kutskel and Orwin Srock joined members of the Sandy Lick Conservation Initiative and DEP May 12 at the DuBois Area Middle School’s first Watershed Environmental Awareness Day. In addition to manpower at the event presenting education on the water cycle and macro-invertebrates, the Chapter had secured a large canopy and Porta-Potties for the event but he cold weather forced them inside anyway. TU met with every 8th grader at school that day and all showed a great interest in the topic. For more information on the Sandy Lick Conservation Initiative check out their website: sandylickci.tripod.com.
Pass It On Fishing Day
June 18 the Chapter partnered with Pass It On/Big Brothers/Big Sisters to take kids fishing at Five Ponds between Luthersburg and Troutville. The children all had a great day though not many fish were caught. Encouragingly, a wild brown trout was caught in Beech Run adjacent to the ponds!
Jefferson County Youth Field Days
July George and Samantha Kutskel and Orwin Srock represented the Chapter at Jefferson County Youth Field Day at Renlow Park near Reynoldsville July 30. They taught fly casting and tying. They donated 3dozen flies to the participants and awarded 4 TU memberships.
