March Membership Program

The next membership meeting/monthly program is Tuesday March 21, 2017 at the Community Room in Martins Grocery Store in DuBois starting at 7 pm. March’s program will feature Shannon White.

Shannon is a PhD candidate at Penn State University and has been conducting fascinating telemetry studies of the movement of brook trout. Shannon has a great blog about her research at thetroutlook.com.

Come learn how trout really think and how far they really travel. We are sure that this will be an informative and fun presentation.

This meeting is open to the public and all are welcome. For more information call George Kutskel at 814-371-9290

Officers and Directors Report

The officers and directors met on February 1, 2017 and took the following actions:

  • Provided support letter to PFBC for approval of wild trout and Class A wild trout waters. You can find the list of waters being considered for designation at this web link: Wild Trout Streams Being Considered.
  • Started planning a family fishing event to be held at the Tannery Dam sometime in later April or early May.
  • Noted that PFBC is proposing to hold a Wild Trout Summit in the summer. PFBC also added six more streams to their Keystone Select Stocked Trout Program, including Chest Creek, Kinzua Creek, and Oil Creek.
  • Appointed Doug Wolfe as the chapter’s Financial Reviewer. This is a new requirement from national TU that each chapter has an officer (who is not authorized to write checks, otherwise withdraw or transfer money from accounts, or use chapter or council credit cards) review the bank and/or credit-card statements every month. Thanks Doug!
  • Appointed Rich Ferrara to fill a director position vacancy. Thanks Rich!
  • Approved donations to the following organizations: $500 donation to PA Council of TU, $500 donation to the Western PA Conservancy, $100 donation to the Headwaters RC&D Council, $100 donation to the Toby Creek Watershed Association, $100 donation to the Bennett Branch Watershed Association, and $100 donation to the Kettle Creek Watershed Association.

February Membership Program

The next membership meeting/monthly program will be Tuesday February 21, 2017 at the Community Room in Martins Grocery Store in DuBois starting at 7 pm. February’s program will feature Kylie Maland and Luke Bobnar of the Western PA Conservancy (WPC) Watershed Conservation Program.

They will present their efforts to incorporate more green, sustainable practices into stream restoration efforts. Project examples include using vegetative elements (a.k.a. soil bioengineering) in restoration practices to provide cost-effective and resilient alternatives and/or supplements to traditional methods (like log and stone structures for in-stream habitat and bank stabilization) to provide even more ecological services and habitat benefits to those projects. They will also discuss large woody materials (LWM) projects in the Allegheny National Forest and how those are developing.

WPC was also recently awarded a Coldwater Heritage Partnership Planning Grant to study the watersheds of Clear Creek State Park and State Forest, so they will discuss that process and hopefully recruit some interested volunteers to assist with the effort.

This meeting is open to the public and all are welcome. For more information call George Kutskel at 814-371-9290.

Thanks for a great turn-out at our Fly Tying Roundtable. Lots of flies were tied and lots of advice was given out – some of it was even true!

George Kutskel and Codey Schlemmer participated for our chapter in the Cross Fork redd count on 12/11/16.  This is an annual event done on all the tributaries of Cross Fork.  The count was much lower this year due mainly to the low water in the summer.

This tributary in was completely dry in September but we did find some redds.

Important Dates for 2017

2017 is right around the corner. We try to find dates and times for meetings that work best for most everyone (it is challenging) and this year we are moving all meetings to Tuesday evenings. The officers and directors will meet quarterly on first Tuesdays starting in February. Membership meeting and programs will be held on the third Tuesdays, except during the summer. Please mark your calendar for the meeting dates listed below.
