Tapered Lines Newsletter – January 2018

Happy New Year!

Hard to believe we have come to the end of another year. As we celebrate the New Year, tradition is to reflect on the past year and make some resolutions for the new.

Education remains a priority for our chapter. We started off last year with Rich Ferra stepping up and teaching our fly tying class. Fourteen students attended, with an evening on the stream at the end. Nine of our members along with some members of other area chapters took the time to become certified fishing skills instructors. We now have a good number of people who can host fishing programs to the public and get fishing license waivers to help bring more anglers into our sport. Due to the great participation, the Clearfield County Conservation District will now be a rod loaner site, thanks to Kelly Williams. Several of these new instructors traveled to Bellefonte to become fly fishing instructors as well.

Registration Now Open for 13th Keystone Coldwater Conference, February 23-24

Coldwater Resource Conservation and Education: Rising to the Challenges; Embracing Opportunities

The Pennsylvania Council of Trout Unlimited will host the 13th Keystone Coldwater Conference February 23-24, 2018 at the Ramada Inn Conference Center in State College. The conference is an opportunity for grassroots conservation organizations, environmental professionals, college faculty, staff, and students to share ideas, concepts, and network in order to protect, conserve and restore Pennsylvania’s coldwater resources.

Officers and Directors Report

The officers and directors met on August 1, 2017 to discuss chapter activities and projects. No actions were taken at the August meeting.

The next AMCTU board meeting is the board reorganization meeting at 6 pm on November 7, 2017 at the Hoss’s in DuBois.

New Meeting Location
Beginning with our October meeting we will be meeting at the Penn State DuBois Campus in the Mary Smeal Building.  Please use parking lot 006 just off of College Place.

2017 AMCTU Fall Picnic

The Allegheny Mountain Chapter of Trout Unlimited will be hosting our annual fall picnic on September 19, 2017 at the Tannery Dam in DuBois.

We will meet at the pavilion at 5:30 PM. Please bring a dish to pass. There will be games, prizes, and fun for all ages! Bring your fishing gear and tales of this year’s outings.

Officers and Directors Report

The officers and directors met on May 2, 2017 and took the following actions:
•    Approved sponsoring to send four youth from our region to the Pennsylvania Rivers Conservation and Fly Fishing Youth Camp at the Allenberry Resort Inn in Boiling Springs, PA.
•    Approved donating $333 to Clarion University for a $1000 educational award to a student studying biology. Oil Creek Chapter and Iron Furnace each contribute $333 to this program too. We have been in this partnership for many years
•    Approved a one-time donation of $500 to the Galeton Development Corporation for the Galeton Dam and Lake Feasibility Study. The Galeton Dam is a significant fish passage barrier for Pine Creek, and this study will address providing fish passage and other ecological issues.

The next AMCTU board meeting is 7 pm on August 1, 2017 at the DuBois Nursing Home. All membership is welcomed to attend board meetings.

2017 Chapter Picnic

AMCTU and Iron Furnace Chapter are once again co-hosting a chapter picnic at Dr. Walter Dick Park (“the fly project”) in Brookville on May 23, 2017 starting at 6 pm.

AMCTU provides the meat and Iron Furnace furnishes the table settings and the fixings. All we ask is that you bring a dish to share and a good appetite. Also bring your gear along as there is always time after we eat to do some fishing. We will be eating at 6 pm so arrive early and do some fishing or eat then fish.

Please come out and join in the fun and meet some of our TU friends. RSVP is not required but appreciated; contact George Kutskel at 814-771-4022 or maksak@comcast.net just so we have enough burgers and hot dogs.
